The term “keto diet” has become an unfortunate part of the food industry. At times, it is viewed as a fad, and sometimes it is ridiculed as being unhealthy.
Ketosis is the key to the benefits of this dietary plan. However, what is ketosis? It is defined as a state of efficient utilization of fats within the body.
This utilizes ketones, which are the breakdown products of body fat. In other words, ketones are stored in adipose tissue, where they can be used for energy. There are three distinct phases of mitosis. These are referred to as the starvation phase, the initial ketosis phase, and the intermediate phase.
During the starvation phase, your body produces very few ketones. You are basically starving your body of ketones.
After about twenty to thirty days, your body switches to the initial phase of ketosis. During this time, ketones are not easily produced, but your body is exposed to large amounts of glucose. The beginning of the starvation phase was caused by the very low levels of carbohydrates in the diet at the time.
During the initial phase, your metabolic rates increase. Your body starts burning the fat stores for energy. The cells become resistant to insulin, and you begin to use fat as your primary source of fuel.
At the end of the final phase, your fat cells become over-exposed to insulin, and you begin to utilize stored fats for energy. To understand how this can help to reduce your cholesterol levels, it is important to know that fats are transported through your bloodstream to where they are needed for energy.
When this happens, there is much more oxygen in the blood vessels, and cholesterol levels go down. While you are in ketosis, your liver starts converting the body fat into ketones, which are the primary source of energy. Once the ketones enter the bloodstream, there is a continuous flow of them through the blood vessels.
As long as there is an abundant supply of ketones in the blood vessels, there will be plenty of oxygen to the muscles and other tissues, and this is one of the reasons that keto diets are so popular. However, just because ketosis occurs is not necessarily bad. The problem occurs when the ketones enter the bloodstream because they can’t be used for energy, but they can still increase your cholesterol levels.
A ketogenic diet can also cause a spike in your cholesterol levels, but at very low or very high levels. When you are consuming a ketogenic diet, your body is in a state of ketosis for up to six weeks. This explains why your cholesterol level may be high when you first start keto, but it will slowly return to normal once you return to a regular diet.
On the other hand, when you return to a regular diet, there is little or no ketones to enter the blood vessels. Since your cholesterol levels return to normal, you are able to maintain your low blood pressure level.
