Those who are new to the Ketogenic Diet need to know what the main differences are from low-carb diets. This is because many people don’t understand the difference between a “Low Carb” diet and a “Keto” diet. So we’re going to look at the main differences between the two so you can make an informed decision.
So, what is Ketosis? Is this really something you want to do if you’re only going to be using it as a dieting tool or are you only doing it to lose weight?
Ketosis, at its very best, is a state where your entire body becomes fat adapted and can not use carbohydrates for energy. Most people with excess body fat are in Ketosis, which means that they have high levels of insulin and glucose in their bloodstream. You’re probably already aware of how this can lead to obesity.
On the other hand, if you’re just doing Ketosis to lose weight then the high levels of glucose in your blood will actually cause your metabolism to speed up making you burn more calories through fat than you normally would if you were eating a regular diet. That’s why a lot of people get tempted to try and use a Ketogenic Diet to get rid of their excess fat or lose weight.
As soon as you get into Ketosis there are two things that you have to learn to do and that is to eat at the right times and to start exercising when you’re tired. Your body starts burning fat on a cellular level so if you’re not exercising, your body is sitting around and is not burning a lot of calories so your metabolism is not running as fast as it should be. Your body will then slow down and eat more but your muscle will be resting rather than being used to generate energy.
So I want to cut out all carbs, this doesn’t sound too bad! When you’re in Ketosis you basically put all of your carb levels to the back of your mind, which means you don’t think about them. This means that your brain gets used to using ketones as a source of energy rather than glucose. So that means that you have to work out a bit.
If you’re willing to put in the effort though you can significantly reduce the amount of carbs you eat and the amount of time you exercise so that you see some weight loss. But you also have to keep in mind that if you’re going to continue to have ketosis you have to work out on a regular basis. Ketosis is a long term solution to weight loss.
Some people think that when you go on Low Carb Diets that you are also going to be Ketosis. But you aren’t. The only difference is that you aren’t keto-adapted and since ketosis doesn’t make you fat so it doesn’t make you lose weight.
This makes sense because there isn’t really much fat in the food you eat when you are in ketosis because you aren’t relying on them as a source of energy. So you still won’t see your body turning to carbs or fat.
The keto diet is a good way to help improve your health if you already have issues with being overweight. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that you need to starve yourself and keep starving yourself. There are many diets out there, and they all provide different solutions.
